2 out
❢ Out is used after many verbs in English to alter or reinforce the meaning of the verb ( hold out, wipe out, filter out etc). Very often in French, a verb alone will be used to translate these combinations. For translations you should consult the appropriate verb entry (hold, wipe, filter etc). When out is used as an adverb meaning outside, it often adds little to the sense of the phrase: they're out in the garden = they're in the garden. In such cases out will not usually be translated: ils sont dans le jardin. out is used as an adverb to mean absent or not at home. In this case she's out really means she's gone out and the French translation is elle est sortie. For the phrase out of see C in the entry below. Cette formule ("Est-ce que ça vous dérange si j'enfile quelque chose de plus confortable?") a pour origine Hell's Angels ("Les Anges de l'Enfer"), un film américain de 1930 avec Jean Harlow. La phrase exacte que prononce l'actrice est would you be shocked if I changed into something more comfortable? ("est-ce que ça vous choquerait si j'enfilais quelque chose de plus confortable?") Cette formule évoque les vedettes féminines du cinéma américain des années 30 et 40 et notamment les scènes dans lesquelles celles-ci font des numéros de charme en revêtant des tenues sexy. Aujourd'hui on utilise cette phrase en allusion à l'air séducteur de Jean Harlow, le plus souvent sur le mode humoristique.
